USS Nautilus SSN-571

Connecticut designated the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) as the official state ship in 1983. Built by Connecticut craftsmen and women, the Nautilus was the world's first nuclear-powered submarine. Connecticut also recognizes a state flagship and tall ship ambassador, and a state aircraft.

Launched in 1954 and off on her first tour in 1955 with the historic message: “Underway on nuclear power,” the USS Nautilus logged over half a million nautical miles during her distinguished 25-year career.

The USS Nautilus is now a National Historic Landmark and berthed permanently at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
