Official State Fish of Michigan

Michigan designated brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) as the official state fish in 1988. Brook trout can only live in cool, clean water and can be found in many of Michigan's lakes, rivers, and streams. All State Fish

Michigan legislators originally chose "the trout" as the state fish in 1965, but did not specify which of the four species of trout found in Michigan was the official state fish (the brook trout, the brown trout, the rainbow trout, or the lake trout); brook trout was specified in the 1988 legislation.
