Official State Vegetable of Georgia
Georgia designated the Vidalia onion as the official state vegetable in 1990 (Georgia also adopted a state fruit, a state crop, and an official prepared food). Texas, Utah, and Washington also recognize varieties of onion as state symbols. All State Foods
The Sweet Vidalia Onion
Internationally acclaimed as the world’s sweetest onion, Vidalia onions can be grown properly in only a small pocket of southern Georgia. Vidalia onions are unsurpassed for sweetness when they mature in the spring. An annual four-day onion festival is held in Vidalia, Georgia (spring of 2017 marks the 40th annual Vidalia Onion Festival); they even have an official onion mascot.
The fields surrounding Vidalia and Glennville in Georgia produce onions from granex seed that are so sweet one can "eat them like apples" (this seed produces a hot onion grown elsewhere, and cannot be called a Vidalia onion - the name is associated with the location).
