Official State Outdoor Drama of Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia designated "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" as the state's official outdoor drama in 1994 (Virginia also recognizes an official historical outdoor drama). All State Arts & Dramas

"The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" is a theatrical production based on a 1908 romance / western novel by John Fox, Jr. and adapted for the stage by Clara Lou Kelly. The outdoor setting for the drama is lovely, with woodland trees, a small waterfall, and new outdoor seating.

"The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" is the love story of a lovely Appalachian mountain girl and a handsome mining engineer from the east; a musical drama that "depicts the story of the great boom in Southwest Virginia when the discovery of coal and iron ore forced the lusty, proud mountain people into making many drastic changes in their way of life" (quote from brochure).

The outdoor drama is performed at the June Tolliver Playhouse, located in the Jerome Street Historic District of Big Stone Gap, Virginia (seats approximately 335 people). The June Tolliver Playhouse is listed on the National and State Historic Landmark Registers.
